A Timeless Brush by John A. Parks
Pennsylvania
artist Glenn Harrington's rich and accomplished oil paintings
seem to capture several time periods at once.
A
young women in a flowing white dress is dancing through a forest,
her hair garlanded with flowers as she clasps a long stalk of goldenrod.
She is painted with sure, flowing brushwork that conveys air and
movement, even as it describes form, texture, and the complex play
of light. it is hard to tell exactly when the picture was painter:
it looks to be from the late 1800s, but there is something about
the girl's expression and the deft lightness of the painter's touch
that makes it contemporary. This is Goldenrod, a work by the Pennsylvanian-based
artists Glenn Harrington, whose rich and accomplished paintings
seem to capture several time periods at once.
"Achieving
a timeless quality in painting fascinates me," says Harrington.
"I'm not interested in making bold political statements. I feel
it is much more satisfying to stay connected to history in a manner
not portrayed as nostalgic or sentimental. The subject of the human
figure in space and landscape has never lost its audience or its
importance." more...
